Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

I guess I'm a little sprinkle-happy, but let's face it, kids are more attracted to foods that look exciting and colorful.  And it doesn't have to be a sugar-coated cake.  I believe in moderation, and a bit of chocolate with fresh fruit is a lovely snack.

This is so simple, and my kids love helping me with the dipping process. It's as fun as an art project — I look at all recipes this way, actually. Summertime is best for these sweet treats, because strawberries are at the peak of their season.  However, your kids will find them delicious any time and I encourage you to also dip apple slices, banana bites, and whatever else sounds good!

Ingredients

  • 8 to 10 large strawberries, stems on
  • about 3/4 cup finely chopped milk chocolate*
  • about 1 tablespoon sprinkles (any color)

Preparation

Makes 8 to 10

Wipe each strawberry clean with a damp paper towel and set aside.

Place the finely chopped chocolate in a somewhat deep container that is microwave-safe; a one-cup, glass measuring pitcher is perfect. Melt the chocolate in the microwave using 20-second increments, mixing it with a teaspoon each time to check the consistency — it should be perfectly smooth.

Make sure the strawberries are completely dry, then dip them into the melted chocolate – holding each one carefully by the stem end – leaving about 1/4 inch of the red visible.  Place each one on a plate (or a parchment paper-covered baking sheet if you're saving for later).  While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle each one with the sprinkles.

*Kids prefer milk chocolate, because it's sweeter and less bitter. However, you can use any chocolate you'd like.

*You will have some chocolate left over, but it's necessary to have more than you need for the dipping process.
