3 Ways to have Fun on a Rainy Fall Day

The next rainy fall day that comes your way and leaves your kids complaining that they can’t play outside and that there’s nothing to do, check out one of these fall-themed indoor activities.

Whip up some Homemade Applesauce

There are many variations of applesauce recipes, but when it comes to cooking with young kids, keeping it simple is usually best. One of the most basic applesauce recipes requires just 4 apples, ½ cup water, ¼ cup sugar and cinnamon. Peel, core and slice the apples into small pieces. Cut the slices into chunks. Put the apples into a pan with the water and let them simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in the sugar and add a sprinkle of cinnamon. Voila, your apples have been turned into a nice warm snack to enjoy on a rainy fall day.

Make a Rain Maker

Bring the rain inside by making your own rain makers. Have the kids decorate a cardboard tube (as large as a mailing tube or as small as a tin foil tube) with markers, stickers and paint. Glitter can also be used to add a little sparkle. Let the tubes dry. Cut two circles of equal size at least ½ inch larger than the circumference of the tube out of heavy construction paper or poster board. Place glue around the outside of one circle. Center the circle on one end of the tube and press the edges down onto the tube. Use an elastic band to further secure the paper circle to the tube. Fill the tube a quarter of the way full with dry beans or rice. Close off the other end of the tube as you did the first. Shake, rattle and roll the rain away!

Paint Apple Trees

Slice an apple down the middle from top to bottom and you have a homemade stamp for the kids to paint with. Pour a small amount of yellow, green and red paint onto three separate disposable plates. On a large piece of paper, draw a tree trunk and branches with a brown marker. Encourage the kids to stamp apples on the tree branches by dipping them into paint then onto the paper. Cut out leaves from green construction paper and have the kids glue them onto the tree.  Let the apple trees dry before hanging them on display for everyone to see.

Rainy days can spell “stir crazy” in any family with children. The next time you find your family stuck inside, try one of these activities to spur family fun.
