Being Friends with the Ex

It seems like just yesterday I was planning for Memorial Day weekend and here I am dusting off the camping gear for the Fourth.

That’s right. I’m currently planning a short camping trip with the kids and my ex. Don’t worry. We’re leaving the hatchet at home.

Literally and figuratively.

One of the things that boggles some of our friends and family members is our desire to maintain and build a friendship, which includes doing things together as a family. Because, let’s face it, even though we’re in the middle of a divorce, we share two amazing children and will always be family. We don’t want our children to grow up in a “broken” home. We want them to live and thrive in a “restructured” home. And so far, they seem to be adjusting really well.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing. I thought I’d strangle him last Halloween and I know I get on his nerves more often than not. Still, we try to push down anger and any sort of bitterness and keep our end game firmly in place.

We’ve had a few people comment that if we can be this good of friends, why are we getting a divorce? Well, I’ll be honest. We couldn’t be this good of friends if we were still married. There’s something very freeing about being able to tell my ex to go home when he starts to get on my nerves. And for him, there’s something very freeing about being able to tell me no when I ask him to do something.

If you’re a single parent, have you been able to keep a relationship going with your ex?
