Charlie Hunnam Explains Why He Took On The ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Role Of Christian Grey

Charlie Hunnam talks about landing the role of Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film, his chemistry with co-star Dakota Johnson and why he’ll be comfortable with the movie’s racy sex scenes.

This weekend at the premiere screening for season 6 of Sons of Anarchy, Charlie chatted about his upcoming work on the big screen in the adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey (which could possibly be a trilogy of films for him).

Charlie explained why the steamy love scenes won’t be a stretch for him.  “My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. [Which included] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man.  I mean, I’m 16- and 17-years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”  Not to mention his experience with similar scenes on ‘Sons of Anarchy’.

And that leading lady is Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don JohnsonCharlie says the two had amazing chemistry during their auditions.  “As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”

Charlie is in a relationship with jewelry designer Morgana McNelis, who is very supportive of the crazy job he does.  “It’s very hard to be with an actor. She’s required to share parts of me that she wouldn’t really want to share. With the nature of this role, that’s going to be times 10.”   And she does know what he’s in for since she read the books. “She read them and loved them and was really excited about the potential of the opportunity for me. If anything, I think it will make us closer. “

Season six of his hit F/X series debuts on Tuesda, September 10th.

Are you a fan of the Fifty Shades books? Will you see the movie in the theater or will you wait until the DVD comes out?  I have been hearing from a lot of fans that they’re more interested in watching this at home.  I guess that’s the movie equivalent of hiding the book’s cover so nobody knows what you’re reading?

In other Fifty Shades news, some fans are so worked up and angry over the casting news that they’ve started petitions, hoping the producers will change their minds and hire different stars.  I remember similar outrage when Robert Pattinson was first announced as Edward Cullen for the Twilight films.  Book fans lost their minds and protested and petitioned, but then when the dust settled most of them got over it and loved him.   So, we’ll have to wait and see if something similar happens for poor Charlie and Dakota
