Taylor Kitsch Talks Haircuts, Homelessness, and Honoring His New Movie Role

Taylor Kitsch teams up with an all-star cast (Mark Wahlberg, Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch) in his new movie “Lone Survivor“, based on the true story of Marcus Luttrell and the tragic loss of Seal Team 10 in Afghanistan.  Taylor sat down with the new edition of Glamour to chat about the film and also to share some tidbits about his career path – which included being homeless!  Take a look at our sneak peek of his interview below!

GLAMOUR: So what’s the story behind the legendary long non-cut (hair) you had for five seasons on Friday Night Lights?

TAYLOR KITSCH: I started growing it when I was 20, playing junior hockey. The first time I cut it was for Battleship—I’d had it long for 11 years. Now it’s kind of got a life of its own.

GLAMOUR: I heard that like Jennifer Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher, you used to model for Abercrombie.

TAYLOR KITSCH: Yeah, that was kind of a weekend thing I did to stay afloat—10, 20 bucks here or there. I was actually homeless at the time.

GLAMOUR: Homeless? Really?

TAYLOR KITSCH: Yeah, I was homeless in New York for a while, and then I went to L.A., where I lived in my car.

GLAMOUR:  In Lone Survivor you play Michael Murphy, one of the Navy SEALs involved in a famous, and tragic, Afghanistan mission.

TAYLOR KITSCH: It’s an incredible story. I broke down crying three times when I saw the movie.

GLAMOUR: Your role looked so intense—emotionally and physically.

TAYLOR KITSCH: We were up in the mountains in Santa Fe and had to fall straight down cliffs, and we trained with live fire using rubber bullets. But during the tough stuff, Wahlberg, Foster, and I would just look at one another, like, “These guys actually did this. So if we bitch out right now, what does that say about us?”

GLAMOUR: Real SEALs helped you guys train for the movie, right?

TAYLOR KITSCH: Yeah, and I’ve become dear friends with [SEAL] Marcus Luttrell—my character, Mike, was his best friend.

GLAMOUR: You’re in Ryan Murphy’s HBO movie The Normal Heart, about early AIDS activism. Love scenes are always awkward, but what’s it like with a man?

TAYLOR KITSCH: I play a guy who’s in the closet, leading a double life. The love story is timeless, though, so it wasn’t hard for me to get into.

GLAMOUR: I love that you’re making a name for yourself telling the stories of super-inspiring men.

TAYLOR KITSCH: That’s what Lone Survivor was all about for me. You get only one chance to play these SEALs, and we really wanted to do these brothers right.
