Treat Yourself To An Acceptably Sassy Girls Night Out This Weekend At Brisbane Festival

Be honest: when was the last time you treated yourself to a girls’ night out?

For me, it’d been — what — months? Longer? I don’t know what it is about becoming a parent that makes organising extracurricular activities suddenly seem like so much work. I guess after spending the week wrangling multiple unruly youngsters in one hand while trying to balance work deadlines in the other and then using what remains of your aching limbs to prevent the house from looking like ground zero of some form of catastrophic natural disaster, mustering the strength just to get out of bed and make breakfast on the weekend feels like a massive tick in the win column!

But the daunting rigmarole of organising an outing with the girls that fits in with everyone’s crazy schedules? Let alone nutting out an itinerary or activity that everyone is happy with? Throw in sweet-talking the hubby into minding the kids for a night? Bleh! That’s a lot to be arsed with.

So I thought I’d share a hot option (emphasis on ‘hot’) for any of you ladies looking for a fun escape this weekend to enjoy with a few of your favourite gal pals.

As you may or may not know, Brisbane Festival is currently in full swing across the Queensland capital with tonnes of exciting events on offer, spanning the realms of music, visual arts, food, comedy, theatre, family fun and more, but there’s one event in particular that has ‘girls night out’ written all over it!

Last weekend, thanks to the power of peer pressure (oh yeah, that’s still a thing when you’re in your mid thirties), one of my besties managed to use her Jedi mind tricks to get me up off the couch to check out a cabaret show she’d heard some good things about dubbed BANG! BANG! and all I can say is… WOW.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve giggled, blushed, clapped, drooled, gasped, sung along and just generally grinned so much in such a short space of time.

Starring charismatic sass-bomb Aussie entertainer Rhonda Burchmore alongside a battalion of incredible dancers including, ahem, plenty of eye candy in the form of perfectly chiselled  blokes decked out in some absolutely wild costumes (I seriously should have brought some laundry with me, there were so many bloody washboards in the place) this show was a deadset scream!

Raunchy without being gratuitous, this stunning and thigh-slappingly hilarious production combines a live band and incredible singers performing renditions of countless classic bangers from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner, Miley Cyrus, Cher and more, with spectacular dance number featuring men in heels, girls in jocks and Rhonda’s world-famous legs tapping up a storm in an explosion of confetti, bubbles, smoke and bull whips (oh yes, any of your prudish BFFs should definitely sit this one out babes!)

The girls and I couldn’t stop talking about it for days afterwards and it’s even led to some new in-jokes in our mum squad.

So if you fancy treating yourself to a girls night out this weekend, I can’t recommend BANG! BANG! enough. But you’ll have to be quick because it’s only on til Sunday!
