How to Set Up Parental Controls on Netflix

Netflix is one of the top streaming services in the world with over 223 million subscribers. They catalogue includes over 17,000 shows, documentaries and movies globally, some of which parents may not want their children seeing. Thankfully Netflix allows subscribers to set up different profiles with preferences for each user. This includes setting age appropriate content for each user and blocking access to age-restricted content.

What are Parental Controls?

Parental Controls allow parents to restrict access to specific content, set time limits and monitory the activity of their children.

How to Create A Kid Profile For Your Child

  • Go to Netflix.com/account and Sign in to your account
  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, from the pull-down menu select Manage Profiles.
  • Click Add Profile, add your child’s name, and select Kid
  • Select your child’s Profile and Edit the Maturity Settings
  • Enter your account password

How to Block Content On A Profile

  • Go to Netflix.com/account and Sign in to your account
  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, from the pull-down menu select Manage Profiles.
  • Enter your account password
  • Under Title Restrictions, type in the name of a specific television show or movie and click on it when it appears.
  • Save the Selected show and add more titles as desired. (Blocked Content will show up in red text)

How to View A Kid Profile’s Activity

  • Go to Netflix.com/account and Sign in to your account
  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, from the pull-down menu select Account.
  • Scroll down to Profile & Parental Controls
  • Select the Profile and select View on Viewing Activity

While it’s nice that Netflix offers Parental Controls and is constantly working to improve their features it’s still a good idea to be aware of what your kids are watching. Technology may not always filter out content that you as a parent finds inappropriate for your family. Only you know what content is best and appropriate for your family. Additionally, ff your child watches Netflix on a tablet you may wish to set screen time limits.
