Sixth Infant Dies in Nap Nanny, a Product Recalled in 2013

Consumer Products and Safety Commission (CSPC) Director Scott Wolfson says that parents should avoid buying these recliners at yard sales, online auctions, or taking them as hand-me-downs. It is now illegal to sell Nap Nanny in the United States.

“Stop using Nap Nanny,” said Wolfson. “It’s dangerous. There have been six deaths already and we don’t want another child to die unnecessarily.”

Once a popular product, about 165,000 Nap Nanny and Nap Nanny Chill infant recliners were sold between 2009 and 2012. The Nap Nanny was recalled last year, but the company responsible for this portable recliner refused to pull it from shelves or to offer refunds, insisting that their product was safe when used properly.

Although limited on what he can say due to a settlement agreement with the maker of Nap Nanny, Brian Theil, whose four-month-old daughter died in 2010 while using the product, points out that another Nap Nanny-related infant death occurred a year before his daughter died. “Had we known that, we never would have purchased this product,” he says.
