Fashion Week is history, but we’re just getting this party started with our fashion week recap. Plan ahead with a glimpse at some of the hottest, most wearable, and most easily accessible looks to hit the runway for Fall 2014—when, hopefully, there won’t be a polar vortex around to mess up your style game.
Shearling
Everywhere you looked during the fashion extravaganza, you spotted something made of shearling—an amazing coat, an accent to bring sophistication to essentials. Though it feels hoity toity at its most basic, shearling is surprisingly easy to work into your existing wardrobe. Try a beyond-cozy wool coat with a shearling collar to ease your way into the look. Rodarte showed a rather unforgettable electric blue coat topped with a nubby shearling collar—not quite fodder for daily wear, natch, but in a darker hue with a fitted silhouette, you’ll own the season.
Gray
While the rather exaggerated silhouettes seen at Araks and Dominic Louis didn’t exactly scream long-term potential, they did boast a certain elegance thanks to their gray hue. The shade was seen in numerous iterations, from faint and elephantine to deep and almost smoldering. No matter your preference, consider gray your numero uno neutral come fall. It’s less expected than black or brown, and is complemented to perfection by a host of jewel tones—think ruby and emerald, to name a few.
Plaid
Go as plaid as you wanna be—and don’t even think twice about doing it. There were plenty chic-check sightings on the runway. There’s a hint of menswear-inspired luxury to pieces that range from flowing pants (not altogether easy to work into your daily wear) to crisp blazers (the perfect alternative to your go-to black). Consider a smart plaid a necessary fall investment; it’s posh, practical, and even a hint sexy, especially paired with something ladylike for contrast—think a lace camisole or a shapely pencil skirt. Oh, the possibilities!
Lace
Lace is a year-round fabric suitable for almost any occasion. Yet according to the fall runways, 2014 is poised to be a true celebration of this time-honored look. Michelle Smith showed one of her most sensual collections for Milly to date; it was rife with peekaboo pieces that felt coy, yet daring. Take your cue from this refreshed take on lace, and go forth with a sheer blouse over a delicate cami, a lace skirt with a scalloped hem, or a fun dress accented by lace accents.
