Go Screen Free April 18-24 2011

Screen-Free Week is an annual celebration where families across America are encouraged to turn-off screens and turn on life. Instead of finding entertainment from televisions, computers and video games, families are encouraged to read, daydream and spend time together doing things that don’t require screen time.

Unplugging for a week can provide real insight into how your family spends its time and can be a springboard for families to make healthier lifestyle choices. On average, preschoolers spend about 32 hours per week in front of a screen with older children spending more, according to the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, presenters of Screen-Free Week.  Too much screen time is associated with poor school performance, obesity and attention problems in children.

While it may be challenging the first day or two, by the end of the week families may find they are enjoying more time together.

Consider these 10 family friendly activities to do during your Screen-Free Week:

  1. Play a board game
  2. Go for a walk.
  3. Read a book.
  4. Do a community service project.
  5. Go on a nature walk.
  6. Have a picnic, inside or out.
  7. Bake cookies.
  8. Make a family photo album.
  9. Write a letter to a family member or friend that lives out of state.
  10. Visit the library.
