Melamine Mugs Recalled due to Burn Hazard

On February 28th, 2012, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Carlisle FoodService Products, announced a voluntary recall of several models of their melamine cups and mugs due to a potential burn hazard.

What do you need to know about this Recall?

These recalled cups and mugs can break when exposed to hot liquids, posing a potential burn hazard to consumers. The nine models of Carlisle cups and mugs which are recalled were sold in a variety of sizes from 7 to 16 oz., and in the following colors: white, green, red, brown, black, ocean blue, sand, honey yellow, bone and sunset orange. They are approximately 2 to 3 inches tall and are made of melamine. The name “Carlisle OKC, OK” and model number are imprinted on the bottom, along with “Made in China” and “NSF.” Some may also include the model name and size, ex. “Durus 7 oz cup.” Cups and mugs and the complete list of those models being recalled can be found on the CPSC website, along with their images and model numbers.

Approximately 111,000 of these products were sold nationally through distributor outlets and online, including food service companies, broadliners and equipment supply distributors. The mugs were sold between January 2011 and January 2012 for between $4 and $10 each and were manufactured in China.

As of February 28th, 2012, Carlisle has received three reports of cups and mugs breaking and as of this date, no injuries have yet been reported.  Further updates on this recall can be found at the CPSC website
