Brooke Burke-Charvet, Dancing with the Stars hostess and mom of four, tells her fans she’s headed for surgery to treat thyroid cancer.
After discovering a lump in her neck during a routine visit, Brooke’s doctors decided to investigate. But the results didn’t give her any definitive answers. “I got my results back days later and they were atypical, which means that the doctors couldn’t confirm whether the nodule was cancerous or benign. So I had to go and do a whole bunch of additional tests and get second opinions. Long story long, I got my results back and they were not good.”
Brooke wants her fans and DWTS viewers to know before they see with her a scar on her neck and wonder if everything’s okay. “It’s taken me a couple of months to really wrap my head around this. Now I’m good. I’m ready to deal with it, and I’m going to be fine. I feel really, really strong. Doctors say this is a ‘good’ kind of cancer to have. My doctor did tell me this is a happily ever after ending kind of thing. I don’t get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened or not follow up or not share it, because it’s going to be pretty much dead center. I don’t want anybody to read about it and get the wrong idea, or think that I’m sick, because I’m not.”
Her Dancing co-host Tom Bergeron expressed his love and support. “I’ve known about this for a few months, and I told her at the time she first told me that I’ve had experience with this in my family. You never want to hear the word ‘cancer,’ but thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers. It has an incredibly high success rate. She knows my love and support are with [her],”
