How to Disinfect Kitchen Cutting Boards the Right Way

I’m hosting Thanksgiving this year, and with my family that is no small task. I have grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, brothers, kids, and a new baby all coming together to give thanks. One thing I get a little paranoid about around the holidays is making sure everything is germ-free. I cook a lot more once the weather gets colder, and with all the food prep around the holidays, it’s important to start with a clean slate. (Tip: I like to start chopping a couple of days before Thanksgiving; otherwise, I can get very overwhelmed with the amount of prep cooking that needs to be done for a big family dinner.)

Disinfecting kitchen tools is a must—I’m not about to be blamed for my uncle’s food poisoning.  Honestly, when was the last time you gave your cutting boards a proper cleaning anyway? (For me, it was last Thanksgiving…)

Here’s how I quickly disinfect my kitchen cutting boards in preparation for holiday madness:

Supplies:

  • 2 teaspoons bleach per gallon of water
  • water
  • dish towel
  • your cutting boards

Instructions for Disinfecting Plastic Cutting Boards:

Step 1: I rinse plastic cutting boards with liquid dishwashing detergent and water.

Step 2: Then soak them in a solution using two teaspoons of bleach per gallon of water for two minutes.

Step 3: Rinse, and air dry on a kitchen towel.

Instructions for Disinfecting Wooden Cutting Boards:

Step 1: For the wooden cutting boards, I wash the cutting boards with liquid dishwashing detergent and water.

Step 2: I pour two tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water to create a sanitizing solution.

Step 3: I then apply the bleach-water solution to the cutting board and let it stand for two minutes.

Step 4: Next, I rinse it with the plastic cutting board solution (two teaspoons of bleach per one gallon of water) and let it air dry.

Disinfecting = done! Next, it’s time to decide on the menu…Pinterest, here I come!
