3 Easy DIY Party Hat Upgrades

I'm obviously a big fan of cute party supplies, and the whole internet has fallen in love with the Oh Joy! for Target party collection. I thought I'd share a few quick ways to add a personal touch and make these sweet little easy DIY party hats that much cuter! Pick your favorite design or make a few of each for a festive way to plus your party in minutes! – xo, Maddy

DIY Fringed Pom Party Hat Topper

Everyone loves a little fringe to get the festivities going, and these party hat toppers are an absolutely darling way to incorporate it.

Supplies:

  • tissue paper and mylar, cut in 1.5" thick strips
  • fringe scissors or normal scissors
  • washi tape

Instructions:

Step 1: With your fringe or standard scissors, fringe 1" deep into the width of the tissue and mylar strips.

Step 2: Layer the different colors together and roll them up tightly, as shown.

Step 3: When the whole strip bundle has been rolled up, twist the bottom (uncut) portion, then wrap that area with washi tape. The second image shows the bundle twisted (bottom example) and wrapped with gold washi tape (top example).

Step 4: After finishing the bundle, cut the tip off of the party hat, cutting close to the top to start and retrimming as needed until the hole at the top of the hat is only just big enough to accomodate the wrapped bundle.

Step 5: Push the bottom of the fringe bundle through the hole; it should be able to stay in place on its own but, if necessary, use a small extra piece of washi tape to secure it on the inside of the hat.

DIY Glitter Number Party Hat Embellishment

Not super crafty? No worries! This sparkly way to celebrate your child's birthday is just about as easy as it comes. All you need are two supplies, five minutes, and one happy child who is excited to ring in a new year!

Supplies:

  • glitter tape
  • scissors

Instructions:

Step 1: Using a printout of a sans serif number as a guide if necessary, shape strips of glitter tape into the desired number. Avoid overlapping the tape where possible; in the example above, I cut  the 45-degree angle at the top of the 4 to run parallel with the horizontal bar that crosses the main vertical bar. This will keep the overall look cleaner. On numbers that have curves, simplify the round shapes so that th curve can be accomplished with 3 or 4 trapezoid pieces tiled tightly together.

Step 2: Peel off the backs of the strips and reassemble onto the hat, one strip at a time, ensuring that the number is centered as vertically as possible.

DIY Paper Pinwheel Pom Party Hat Topper

We've seen party hat pom toppers before, but this paper medallion style version is a fun new take that I'm absolutely in love with! You can easily create these with supplies you likely have around the house—especially if you're the creative type.

Supplies:

  • scrapbook paper
  • paper trimmer
  • hot glue and glue gun
  • bone folder and ruler (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut two 2" strips of scrapbook paper in the color of your choice. Fold the strips every half inch; I recommend using a ruler and bone folder for straight, even edges if you have them handy.

Step 2: Nest the end flap of one of the strips into the final "V" fold of the other strip and glue them together to create one continuous, long strip.

Step 3: Look at the direction of the last flaps on either end; if they're not both facing the same direction, trim a piece off so that they are.

Step 4: Use hot glue to attach the last flap on one side of the accordion strip to the side of party hat, and then attach the other side's last flap to the opposite side of the party hat.

Step 5: When the glue from both flaps has dried, lift the accordion slightly and glue around the tip of the party hat, and then press the accordion into the glue to set the medallion in place.
