Decorating the Guest Room

Welcome guests to rooms that are first and foremost decorated with their comfort in mind. Decorate the room as you would your own room, with attention to design and detail. And think of what needs they may have. You want to avoid a guest having to ask you for anything.

When you start to plan how you are going to decorate your guest room, start with the recollection of your best hotel experience and try to replicate it. The number one purpose of this room is to provide your guests a private and comfortable place to sleep and relax.  Less is more as you don’t want to clutter the space – you want to leave lots of breathing room and surfaces where your guest can put their belongings.

Once you have the room set up it is a good idea to test it out by sleeping in it one night to see how it feels, then you can make any necessary changes. Ask yourself – is the bed comfy? Did the comforter provide enough warmth? Was the pillow too flat or high?  Was the temperature OK? Does the window treatment provide the proper amount of privacy and light control or did the sunshine awaken you?   Once you have experienced the room as a guest would you will know firsthand what it needs to give your guests a visit that they will fondly remember.

The Bed and Bedding

1. Make guests feel welcome with a comfy bed dressed in a plump comforter, duvet, and crisp sheets. Have a few pillows on the bed that are different heights and sizes so your guest can pick which one suits them best for sleeping, the rest can be used to prop up when they lay down to read.  Think of the bed as your guests’ island – where they can get a good night’s sleep, read, or browse their laptop. A queen size bed is best if you have the room as it provides sleeping space for a single person or a couple. HOPEN series bed frame.

2. Outfit the bed in wonderfully soft and colorful bed linens so it looks modern and fresh. Keep an extra sheet set and blanket in the closet in case they spill their coffee or need another blanket for warmth.  TANJA BRODYR bedding.

3. The one place you should always splurge on when decorating your guest room is a mattress. Guests won’t notice the dresser or chair, but they will notice an out-of-shape or uncomfortable mattress.  Choose a quality mattress and your guests will love you for it. Give Them The Comforts of Home

4. If your guest room shares space with a home office, clear at least a foot or two of pole space in the closet or purchase an inexpensive freestanding unit and over-the-door hooks that can accommodate some hanging clothes. Don’t forget a supply of 6 or 8 hangers. PAX LYNGDAL wardrobe with interior organizers is an ideal way to add closet space for smaller spaces.

-A bench at the end of the bed is an ideal place to set suitcases.

– Create a soft surface for your guest’s feet to land with the addition of a few area rugs placed by the bed. FLOKATI high pile rug.

5.  A small TV placed on a small dresser or storage unit will make your guest feel at home.  Add a DVD or CD player and some of your favorite movies. Don’t forget to place the remote control near the bed so they don’t have to get out of bed to turn them off.   An alarm clock, iPod dock, and/or radio will also be very much appreciated. 6. Overhead lighting can be glaring. A bedside lamp allows your guest task lighting to read in bed and is easy to reach to turn on/off without having to get out of bed. For general lighting, a floor lamp placed in a corner will illuminate the space and balance the light in a welcoming way. ALANG table lamp.

7. If you have the space, an inexpensive but comfortable chair or loveseat will provide a place for guests to put on shoes, toss clothes or sit and read. KARLSTAD sofa.

-An end table with a small notepad, a pen, and a few current magazines or bestsellers will go a long way toward making a guest feel at ease.

Make It Feel Like a 5-Star Hotel

8. Even if your guest room is small, you can still create a relaxing space with the use of double duty furniture. The OPPDAL Queen bed frame has four large drawers that will allow you to utilize the space under the bed for storing those extra bed linens, pillows, and blankets or even the guests belongings.

-A pretty throw adds texture and will make the room feel inviting and cozy. It’s also easy to grab if needed to snuggle in.

-An ottoman or an IKEA STOCKHOLM footstool adds a modern touch to any room and is the perfect place to set a tray of tea and a snack on for your guest.

-Place a basket on a side table or dresser and fill with fresh towels and a few travel-sized items such as toothpaste and shampoo.

-If you have an extra chest of drawers, clear out one or two drawers for your guest to place small items.   MALM 4 drawer dresser.

-BERYLL wall spotlights add the perfect light for your guest to read by when they are laying on the bed.

-Easy to adjust window treatments will allow your guest to block or filter the sunlight as needed and provide the privacy they desire.
