When I was pregnant, I had the irresistible urge to just nest—starting around the house and then finally moving to the baby’s room. While it sometimes seemed easier to just buy something, I can tell you that few things are more satisfying than when I look at some projects in my daughter’s nursery that I made by hand.

From mobiles to rugs to foot rests to changing tables, look to your toolbox before buying your wants for the nursery. Here are some of my favorite gender neutral nursery ideas. Whether you’re keeping the sex of your baby a surprise or you’re just into the look, these DIY projects can be customized for a boy or a girl. With these clever ideas, you can get crafting as early in your pregnancy as you want to.
