15 Lessons I Want to Teach My Daughter About Having Girlfriends

I’ve been surrounded by women all my life. From growing up with two sisters to being a member of a sorority in college, women have played an integral role in shaping me into the woman I am today. My closest girlfriends have been there for me during the best and worst of times, loving and supporting me unconditionally. They inspire and push me to be the best version of myself. These special bonds and relationships are ones that I can’t wait for my little Lew to experience. So, I’ve gathered 15 friendship lessons about having girlfriends in her life in the hope that she finds the friendships I have found!

Do:

  • Be supportive of one another. In the girl world, it seems like there is always a competition to look the best, do the best, and be the best. Instead, support each other and celebrate the good in one another.
  • Be respectful. When you borrow your girlfriend’s clothes or accessories, take good care of them. Respect each other’s space and belongings and you won’t have any problems.
  • Be flexible. There are going to be times in your lives where you are so busy and making time is seemingly impossible. But it’s so important to make time for the people you love, especially your girlfriends.
  • Give more and take less. This is so important not only with your girlfriends, but in life in general. By following this, you will be the most thoughtful and kind friend.
  • Stay true to yourself. When you are with your best girlfriends, you won’t feel like you need to be someone you’re not. Being authentic will breed the most genuine friendships.

Don’t:

  • Be judgmental. It’s easy to fall into gossiping with your girlfriends, but this can lead to trust issues within friendships.
  • Be high maintenance. Life isn’t easy, so don’t make your friendships hard. Just accept things as they come and love unconditionally!
  • Cause drama. Let go of the little things that bother you — they won’t be an issue later on. Pick your battles and understand that everyone makes mistakes sometimes.
  • Break girl code. No boy is EVER worth ending a friendship over.
  • Compare yourself to your friends. Embrace your individuality because all of your friends will bring a unique and special trait to the table.

Reminders:

  • Girlfriends should never feel like an obligation.
  • As life goes on, friends will come and go, but your true girlfriends will always remain.
  • Surround yourself with women that bring out the best in you.
  • True friends will tell you when you’re wrong and right, but will love you unconditionally.
  • You should be able to laugh and cry together (even at the same time)!
