For the past 13 years, pop icon Britney Spears has lived under a court-ordered conservatorship due to her high-profile mental health crisis in 2008. Usually granted for someone the court deems incompetent to handle their own affairs, Spears has been anything but: releasing albums, touring, and a successful Las Vegas residency. The controversial conservatorship, in which her father Jamie Spears controls, has come under as of late, spawning the #FreeBritney movement that claims Spears is being controlled against her will.
A report in The New York Times revealed that no only does Spears’ father her estimated $60 million net worth, he also receives a $16,000 month salary and $2,000 a month for office space, while she only receives a $2,000 weekly allowance. The report detailed the lengths the “Toxic” singer has taken to free herself from her father and sees the conservatorship as an “oppressive and controlling tool against her.”
On June 23, 2021, Britney Spears addressed a Los Angeles Superior Court and publicly spoke for the first time about the toll the conservatorship has taken on her life. In an emotionally packed 23 minutes, pleaded with a judge to free her while revealing the trauma she has endured for the last 13 years. During her testimony, Spears revealed that she was forced to do tours under threats of lawsuits by her management team and is basically being used as a cash cow at the expense of her mental health (via Variety).
Britney Spears Claims She Is Forcibly Required To Have An IUD
In one of the most shocking and vile revelations of Spears’ testimony, the iconic singer claims she would like to get married and have more children but is forced to be on birth control. “I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have a (IUD) inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the (IUD) out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children – any more children. So basically, this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good,” she told the judge.
“I Deserve To Have A Life”
Spears also revealed she is basically being held prisoner and only wishes to have a life of her own making. “I deserve to have a life. I’ve worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two to three year break and just, you know, do what I want to do. But I do feel like there is a crutch here,” she said. “And I’m tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does, by having a child, a family, any of those things, and more so.”
The former pop princess states that she’s been lying to the world about her happiness and wants to set the record straight once and for all. “It’s a lie. I thought I just maybe if I said that enough maybe I might become happy, because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I’m not happy,” she pleaded. “I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
