They say that motherhood is the toughest job in the world, and that is true, but maybe we should be saying parenting is the toughest job on earth. Thanks to highly visible dads like Adam Levine who are making being a stay-at-home-dad something to aspire to, being an involved father may finally be taken more seriously.
The former frontman for Maroon 5 and judge on The Voice opened up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently about how his new gig as a SAHD is exactly where he wants to be right now. While talking about taking a break from his music career, the Voice star got candid about the transition into being a SAHD.
I Married A Man Who Does It All, So Gender Roles Aren’t A Thing In Our House
“I do miss it, but I also don’t miss how much I had to work,” Levine Told Ellen “I was just constantly working for so many years—very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that, but to be able to spend time in this moment with my new, young family, and just have the greatest time ever. Now I’m just like a stay-at-home dad. I just stay home and do very little. It’s great.”
While Levine may be obviously head-over-heels in love with two daughters, Dusty Rose and Gio Grace, he’s probably in for a rude awakening when he realizes that parenting isn’t “doing very little”. Any SAHM I know is probably rolling her eyes at his idea that parenting is just hanging out. And while he and his wife, Behati Prinsloo are certainly wealthy enough to hire an army of help (and they likely have) being a parent is still round-the-clock-work.
Criticism aside, it’s truly wonderful to see our culture celebrating dads who put their kids front and center of their lives in the same way that mothers have always done. Even better, though, is that we are finally entering an era in which mocking dads as clueless morons who can’t change a diaper or have never washed a dish in their life is becoming outdated and frankly, boorish. The more high profile dads out there showing the world that parenting doesn’t have to require making the mother the default worker in raising great people, the better.
Lessons I Learned From My Stay-at-Home Dad
We can’t wait to hear what Levine will have to say about being a SAHD in a few months after he settles into the role and embraces the hard work that comes with it. Because while we love that he is taking a break from his professional out-of-the-house job to care for his daughters, we know that he just stepped into the most important job of his life and we’re super happy and excited for him!
