If you have plenty of denim scraps left from your DIY denim projects, then it’s time to make a throw pillow cover with them. You can use single-colored denim fabric or bits and pieces of multiple shades for the pillow for this DIY.
Since you can easily wash away spills and stains, these pillow covers are ideal for daily use, especially for families with kids who love to paint or draw on every surface. It is also an excellent choice for pet parents, where you can wash away major incidences. You can use blue denim or make it colorful with denim of any color. Make sure you like how the colors pair before stitching the pattern together.
Materials
- A selection of scraps from old jeans in various shades of blue (or another color of your choice)
- Piece of cardboard to make a template
- Rotary cutter and mat
- 2 pieces of fabric for the back, approx. 20.5″ x 15.5″
- Foam board and thumbtacks
- Sewing machine
- Pins and needles
Procedure
- First, create a template out of cardboard approximately 20.5″ long and 2.4″ wide.
- Get one of the strips and fray the long edges. Do this by pulling out the threads at the edge. Repeat with all the strips.
- Gather all the frayed denim strips. Take half of the strips and pin the top of them to the foam board using the thumbtack. Pin them to lie next to each other and mix up the indigo shades.
- Weave one of the other strips across the rows of denim strips. Secure this denim strip with a thumbtack. Repeat with the other denim strips.
- You can make this pattern without stitching across all the woven denim strips to give it a relaxed look. However, if you want to keep the strips rigid, stitch across them before making the back of the pillow.
- Prepare the envelope-style cover for this denim woven pillow.
- Cut two pieces of fabric from your stash into approximately 20.5″ x 15.5″. Then, stitch a 0.20″ hem along the 20.5″ edge on one of these fabric pieces.
- Pin the two pieces of backing fabric together with the woven denim on the right sides. The two pieces of backing fabric will overlap, so the hemmed edge will be the top edge.
- Stitch up all sides on a sewing machine to finish the woven denim pillow cover, turn the envelope’s right sides out, and pop in a cushion pad.
