When used wisely, though, the world wide web can be an amazing resource for children. Today we’re highlighting two kid-centric sites that you can feel good about sharing with your off-spring.
First up is Kids Who Love to Cook. If you’ve got a budding Emeril or Rachel Ray (or aspire to have one), this is one site you won’t want to miss. It’s filled with video cooking segments made for kids, by kids. Each video features a child cooking up something tasty from beginning to end. That means all the dishes shown are actually made by the kids, which can be huge in inspiring your kiddo to dawn an apron and get chopping.
Something else we love is the site’s mission to “embrace and respect all food cultures and personal preferences. So it’s totally okay if Isabelle wants to prepare a Shnitzel dish with veal (using her Austrian gradmother’s recipe), or if Padma, who is a vegetarian, only cooks vegetarian dishes.”
Second on our list is Here There Eveywhere – News for Kids, a news website/blog designed for elementary school-aged children. Its purpose is to show kids how they are connected to their world and to introduce them to the people and events shaping it. The site’s creator, a former producer for NBC’s Today Show, says it can be read with a caregiver or without.
Even though the site is meant for younger children, it doesn’t shy away from real world news. Covered topics include everything from movies, science and sports to natural disasters and even national and global politics. It’s an excellent tool for parents looking for ways to introduce concepts such as civic-mindedness and global awareness to their school aged children.
