Begin by heading outdoors and going on a rock hunt. On this particular day we only ventured as far as our own backyard. If the weather’s good, though, you can stretch this part into an all-morning nature hike. Help the kids find large, flat rocks – they’ll work the best for stage two.
Once you’ve returned from exploring, rinse and dry all your treasures.
Now it’s time to decorate. I had some left over children’s paint chips lying around from our latest trip to Home Depot. Since my son is a big fan of this particular mouse, I knew they’d be perfect. You could also use stickers of whatever character, animal, vehicle, etc. your child is currently obsessed with.
Next, cover your rocks with a thin layer of Mod Podge, apply the paper, and cover with a second coat.
Allow the stones to dry overnight and you’re all set. There are endless possibilities for playing with these rocks – hide them in the back yard for a scavenger hunt, make sets of each color and turn them over to play a memory game, or use them as a cute way to keep your picnic blanket in place. Even better, turn the kids loose with them sans instructions and see what they come up with!
