Fall Wreath DIY

Home DIY: Fall Wreath

Materials:

  • 1 yard burlap
  • 1 wire wreath frame (about 15 inches wide)
  • 1 roll gold tulle
  • 1-2 picks of fall leaves or foliage
  • a small bundle of 3-4 ears of mini Indian corn (Indian popcorn)
  • 1 package raffia
  • hot glue gun
  • 3-4 glue sticks
  • scissors
  • wire cutters

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut the burlap into 5 inch wide strips. You may be able to find rolls of burlap already cut to 5 inches swaths in your local craft store. (If so, you can skip this step.)

Step 2: Lay a burlap strip under the wire wreath frame, and begin by tucking under the end of the strip and hot gluing it to the wire frame.

Step 3: Keep gluing the burlap to the frame on both sides every inch or two. Let the burlap gather as you go so it’s loose and ruffles a little on the front, not flat or tight. When a strip ends, repeat the process with the next strip until you get all the way around the wreath frame with the burlap loosely gathered when you look at it from the front.

Step 4: Hot glue the gold tulle to the outside edge of the wreath frame, gathering as you go, so it ruffles to the outside of the wreath. Keep going around the wreath gathering the tulle and gluing it to the frame until you have 3 to 4 layers of tulle ruffles.

Note: Be careful with the hot glue on this step. The tulle is very thin and the glue will go right through it to your fingers. You may want to use the end of a pencil or wooden stick to push the tulle into place once you’ve put a spot of glue on the wire frame.

Step 5: Grab a handful of raffia strings (each about 1 inch thick), Smooth and straighten the strands together, then wrap them around into a large raffia bow. Wrap a couple strands of raffia around the center of the bow and tie the strands tight to hold the bow in place.

Step 6: Hot glue the bow in place to the burlap over the wire frame at the center bottom of the wreath.

Step 7: Hot glue the bundle of mini Indian corn to the center of the bow by it’s husks. Wrap a couple more pieces of raffia tightly around the corn and the bow and tie it in the back to reinforce the glue and hold it all firmly in place.

Step 8: Add a few more stands of raffia about 12 to 16 inches long to the top for a hanger. Wrap them around the top, then tie them off at the end.

Step 9: Use a pair of wire cutters to cut loose individual leaves from the picks. Hot glue several leaves so they stick out from behind the bow at the bottom of the wreath. Hot glue a few more leaves around the wreath at the top and on the sides.

Step 10: Hang your fall wreath on your front door, or inside on a wall or interior door.
