4 Maternity Outfit Hacks That Saved Me Megabucks

Throughout my pregnancies I loved ogling gorgeous, stylish maternity wear, but with bills from IKEA piling up (the cot! the highchair! the nightlights!) and future unemployment looming (at least for the next few months) my maternity purchases consisted of buying a few very stretchy, very affordable pieces. Meanwhile, I tried as many styling tweaks and tricks as I could to make the clothes I already had work harder.

Here are some great maternity outfit hacks I came up with:

1. Tie your white shirts

It’s the kind of thing you associate with bikini dressing and pina coladas—and while you might not be enjoying those two things anymore, there’s no reason you can’t use a tie-front shirt to to dress a growing bump. Just unbutton your last few buttons, take the ends of your shirt, and tie on the top side of your baby belly. Paired with a stretchy pencil skirt, it’s a maternity look that channels all the fun of sarong—with a whole lot more style.

2. Drape your jackets and coats from your shoulders

Anna Wintour. Aimee Song. Leandra Medine. They’re all fans of draping their coats—and now’s your time to make like an international style star too. Sure, you’ll be doing it because your jackets don’t actually do up, but to everyone else it’ll just seem like you’re keeping your hands free to instantly ‘gram your review of the shows.

3. Embrace the mega tee

Every girl’s got a couple of massive T-shirts. Maybe yours was stolen from your boyfriend. Maybe it was inherited from a sports team. Or maybe you just got your size waaaaay wrong shopping online. Well, now’s the time for that tee to shine. Mega T-shirts are gold when it comes to swathing your bump in the coolest street-ready style. Just add black leggings. Done.

4. Rock overalls

Denim shirts? Nup. Denim skirts? Sorry. Cut-offs? Don’t even think about it. It’s an unfortunate side effect of pregnancy that denim clothes go the way of wine and soft cheeses, for six months at least. The one denim piece you can rock to the delivery room and back again: overalls. With their expanding side buttons and adjustable bib front, they’re the maternity version of Iron Man’s suit—only way more comfy.
