Your parents’ dreams of having grandchildren to spoil are finally coming true. But being called “Grandma” and “Grandpa?” Not so much. Who knew grandparent names could be so tricky? Many active grandparents today are anything but old and feeble and the monikers Grandma and Grandpa connote walkers, housecoats and dentures. Grandparents are spending a fair amount of time deciding not only what role they will play in their grandchildren’s lives, but what they want their granddaughters and grandsons to call them.
And since people are living longer and blended families are common, modern grandchildren may have an entire gaggle of grandparents. If they are lucky, they have not only grandparents but also great-grandparents, and maybe even some step-grandparents as well. So what’s a tot to do with five or six “Grandmas”? If all the grandmothers are known as Nana or Grannie, the child is likely to be permanently confused.
The baby boomer generation is coming up with new nicknames for Grandma and Grandpa. Here is a list of potential grandparent names that can help them decide.
