Planning on whipping out your classic recipes of turkey loaf or turkey meatballs for dinner this Thanksgiving? Why not jazz it up and turn those recipes into sweet potato turkey nuggets for your picky toddlers? This nugget recipe made of sweet potato and turkey is a nutritious, healthy, and preservative-free finger food option for your little ones, especially for Thanksgiving dinner. They are of-so-delicious and we can guarantee that the grown-ups will also be asking for second servings. These tiny bites are suitable for babies eight months and older, who are capable of handling textures with little lumps and bumps.

Ingredients

  • 454 grams of ground turkey
  • 1 large sweet potato
  • ½ large onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons ground thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1-2 cups plain breadcrumbs
  • 1-2 cups oil (canola, peanut, or another oil of your choice)

Instructions

  1. To make the sweet potato turkey nuggets, peel and chop the onion and sweet potatoes first.
  2. Then, place onion and sweet potatoes in a bowl, cover with water, and boil till the sweet potatoes are super soft.
  3. Once boiled, drain the water, mash potatoes and onions together, and set aside. Let it cool completely.
  4. Then, take a large bowl, and combine ground turkey with seasonings of your choice. Once cooled, add the mashed sweet potato and onion mixture to the turkey mix and combine well. Make sure that the sweet potatoes are cooled completely. Otherwise, it will cook the raw ground turkey.
  5. Now, spoon the meat mixture into a nugget shape (or any shape of your choice) and keep it aside on an oiled or parchment-lined tray.
  6. Once you have prepared all the nuggets, coat them in breadcrumbs on both sides and set aside.
  7. Then, warm oil on medium heat in a pan and fry the sweet potato turkey nuggets until lightly brown on both sides (should take about 2-3 minutes). After straining them, leave them on a paper towel to remove any excess oil.

Your sweet potato turkey nuggets are ready to be enjoyed with a dip or sauce of your family’s choice. Let your toddler pick the dip they want with the nuggets and they will surely clean the plate by the end of the Thanksgiving dinner.

You can also bake them in the oven or make them in the air fryer for a healthier option. So, try this sweet potato turkey nugget recipe on Thanksgiving for your toddlers, and share their reactions in the comment section below.
