Apple Pie Nachos Recipe for a Sweet Start To Fall

Fall is here and while pumpkin is the flavor of the season, let’s not forget about the crunchy and sweet apples available in the market as the leaves start changing color. While some prefer pumpkin pie, apple pie is also oh-so-delicious and a must-have during fall. So, try this apple pie nachos recipe instead of reaching out for your traditional pie recipe.

Since this does not require any crust, you can savor the taste of apple pie without having to worry about the lattice pie crust. Made with homemade cinnamon sugar tortilla chips, cinnamon apple chunks, and your family’s favorite toppings (think caramel, pecans, and whipped cream), this apple pie nachos recipe will surely be a favorite among your family members. However, you can make it even easier with store-bought cinnamon sugar pita chips.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon, divided
  • 3 flour tortillas, 6″ in size
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, divided
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • ¾ pound Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji apples
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon caramel sauce
  • Pecans (optional)

Preparation

  1. To make the apple pie nachos recipe, set the oven rack in the middle. Heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and then line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup of granulated sugar and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. Cut the tortillas into triangles, about 8 pieces per tortilla. Then, add the tortillas to the prepared baking sheet. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Brush the butter on top of the tortillas. Sprinkle some of the cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Flip the pieces, brush the other side with butter as well, and top with cinnamon sugar.
  4. Bake the tortillas for 5 minutes. Then, flip and bake again until the edges are golden brown (should take about 5 to 6 minutes). Cool the nacho chips on the baking sheet until crispy (should take about 5 to 10 minutes).
  5. Peel, core, and cut the apples into about ½” dice. Measure 2 ¼ cups of diced apple for the sumptuous filling.
  6. In a medium-sized skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  7. Then, add the diced apples, brown sugar, a tablespoon of granulated sugar, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, and nutmeg. Saute until the mixture is crisp-tender (should take about 5 to 6 minutes).
  8. Then, transfer the filling to a bowl and freeze until it has cooled down completely (should take about 10 minutes). Alternatively, you can refrigerate it until you are ready to use it.
  9. Add heavy cream and a tablespoon of granulated sugar to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Slightly tilt the bowl and vigorously whisk until you get stiff peaks (you can do this with an electric whisk as well).
  10. Lastly, add the baked tortilla chips to a pretty plate. Top with cooled apple filling, whipped cream, caramel sauce, and cinnamon and serve.
