5 Simple & Healthy Pasta Salads for Baby-Led Weaning

My children’s all-time favourite pasta dish was (and still is) a super simple “pasta in bianco”—that is, pasta coated in butter, extra-virgin olive oil, and Parmesan cheese. While one child with a delicate palate might prefer a milder-tasting pasta, others might prefer a richer tomato or bolognese sauce. I’m lucky that my children love them all!

I was really into making sure my son had a diverse eating experience when we first introduced solids, and these hearty pasta salads were a great fit. In one meal, they offer baby a variety of textures and flavours, from roasted veggies and creamy ricotta, to mild zucchini and tuna. They are super healthy and easy to make, and are full of nutrition—they make a great packed lunch for school-age children. Essentially, with these recipes you can make one meal that will serve the entire family, baby included.

Note that most of these pasta recipes cater to adults (which means that baby can enjoy what the family eats too!). However, if you prepare these for baby only, you might want to choose small, pincer grip–friendly pasta, such as shells or macaroni. (You can find more pasta shapes here.) Remember that pasta such as fusilli or rigatoni or other types that have grooves in them will be easier for baby to grab and handle as opposed to smooth pasta such as penne or spaghetti.

Remember, always consult with your pediatrician regarding introducing solid foods to your baby and specifically discuss any foods that may pose allergy risks for your baby.
