This simple slow-cooker snack is a wonderful choice to use as a low-sugar sweet food for kids, and it comes with an edible handle, too!
Ingredients:
- 5 pounds of Macintosh apples
- 3 Granny Smith apples
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- a pinch nutmeg
- ½ cup water
- 9 inch prepared pie crust (not deep dish)
- slow-cooker
Preparation:
Step 1: Wash, peel, and core the apples and slice then into quarters.
Step 2: Add apple pieces to slow-cooker.
Step 3: Add the brown sugar, water, and spices to the slow-cooker
Step 4: Stir to combine ingredients.
Step 5: Cover slow-cooker, set heat to low, let simmer away up to 8 hours! Check the applesauce every hour or so and give it a stir. It’s done when the applesauce reaches the desired texture you like; it can be chunky or really thin.
Step 6: To make Pie Crust Strips, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Step 7: Roll out pie crust then cut it into strips of any size you desire.
Step 8 (optional): For older kids ONLY, brushed some melted butter on the pie crust strips and sift a bit of cinnamon and sugar over them.
Step 9: Place strips on an ungreased baking sheet, and bake strips at until golden; approximately 10 minutes.
Step 10: Allow pie strips to cool.
Step 11: Once the applesauce is ready dish it out, serve with the pie strips and enjoy!
